As noted in earlier posts, Blues music as ben a major influence on the development of many other types of music.  It seems that one major influence on the creation of the Blues was the hard life that arose from hardships experienced by African-Americans in the Mississippi Delta at the beginning of the 20th Century.  The field workers used work shouts that involved a call and response type of rhythm that evolve into the early Delta Blues. Where can I go to get my blues fix?

My favorite artist is Jonny Lang and he hasn’t toured anywhere near where we live (Portland, Oregon) since 2006 in his turn around tour. I have no plans this summer so I need something to go to like a blues festival (tht would kick ass) close to portland oregon. It also has to be cheap because my mom and I can’t afford shiz right now. Does any one know of something like this?

Ch-Ch-Ch beat me to it. I lived in Portland from 2004-2006, and the Waterfront fest was one of my favorite things about the town. Don’t overlook the smaller stages-one of the best gigs I saw was Mark Dufresne of Roomful of Blues doing an incredible set that was a virtual history of blues harp playing.

I like a lot of American rock, particularly those with a heavy blues influence…there’s a lot of American folk I like too, also with heavy blues influence (Okay, I get that American music is influenced by Blues), so I figure maybe I should actually listen to some blues, maybe I’ll like it.

I have been fortunate enough to have been able to attend the Sunflower River Blues Festival twice.  I would have gone many more times but the time of the festival coincides with some manditory raining that I needed to attend in New Hampshire.  This festival is in Clarksdale, Misissippi.  Admission is free and the attendees are a mix of black and white.  I have never deen any type of trouble in Clarksdale.
